Folding Basin More than just a sink
Peregrine has done it again with this ultralight folding basin. First of all, this is an item I never thought I would add to my backpack. In today’s world of ultralight backpacking, the thought of taking a “camping sink” along seems like one of the first things that would get tossed out of the pack. However, I have found the 2 oz that this folding sink added to my backpack was well offset for the convenience it added in the camp. After taking this collapsible sink on several trips I have found it to be something I will always carry along.
Ultralight convenience from this collapsible sink
Having the ability to bring a basin of water into the campsite really has its benefits. I typically camp near a water source, so it is simple to fill and carry up to be used. The ability to clean your hand’s face or dishes in the campsite is great after hiking miles earlier in the day. In addition to convenience, I feel this is a better way to use the water source. Evidently washing your hands and dishes in a creek puts contaminates directly in the water source. This can make a big difference in leaving no trace. By using a camping wash basin to clean with, then pouring out on shore away from the creek, it allows the water to be filtered before making its way back into the watershed.
Peregrine Ultralight Folding Basin | Specifications
For my use, I selected the small version, Peregrine Item # 329165. This folding basin holds a full 5 liters of water and weighs only 2 ounces. The folding basin easily holds the five liters of water without spillage. The carry handles are superbly capable of comfortably carrying the load. They have an excellent grip and balance the load. I found it to be easy to carry a full basin back to camp with little to no effort. The Folding basin comes with a storage bag with a mesh back, this keeps the basin in a very compact space. The storage bag does, however, add .2 ounces to the weight for a total weight of 2.2 ounces.
Peregrine Ultralight Folding Basin Review | Conclusions
In conclusion, the Peregrine Ultralight Folding Basin is a real contender for the weight and space it requires in your backpack. It adds nice convenience and efficiency to the campsite after a long day on the trail. It is perfect for extinguishing a camp fire, by dumping five liters of water at a time. Finally, the environmental impact by protecting the watershed from the accidental contaminations by emptying the dirty water away from the water supply, definitely makes taking it along worth it.
