Awesome, Ultralight, and Affordable | BRS-3000T. Can this be true?
First of all, this never seems to happen in the ultralight backpacking world. I am very impressed with this BRS-3000T stove, and I believe it may be the most affordable stove I have ever purchased. Even if you are just looking for a “Backup” stove. On a long trip, having a second of anything is usually not an option. However, this stove weighs in under a once, so it is certainly a viable option. I will cover the pros and the cons of this Ultralight Titanium Stove Review.
First, how I typically use my stove
I need to preface this review based on my backpacking style. My friends and I “usually” carry our own stove & food. I typically only cook for one or two people. This likely would not be a good solution if you wanted to use it to prepare meals for a large group. Also, 90% of what I use my stove for is to boil water. Water is all I need for coffee or rehydrating a freeze-dried meal. If I am to prepare a larger meal for a group, I will use the fire. It is amazing how well a heated flat rock will cook a steak.
Ultralight Titanium Stove Review – Performance
Well, I guess first things first, how well does it work. A boil test is a great way to test the performance.
Here are the specifics of my test.
- 1600 feet above sea level
- approx 70 deg room temperature
- Water temp about 63 deg
- FULL 24 oz of water (3 cups)
- 16 oz is all that is needed for most freeze dried meals
- Stove on Full using a used fuel can at about 50% full
Amazingly it achieved a nice boil around 60 seconds, and a full-blown boil at 68 seconds. Other reviews I have read state boil times from 3 to 4 minutes. My results were 3 to 5 times faster. This is likely due to the Pot I used for the test. I WILL BE REVIEWING THIS POT AS WELL. It is one of my favorite cookpots and I take it every time.
Ultralight Titanium Stove Review | BRS-3000T – Burn Control
Burn control is amazing on this stove. It is very adjustable, from a very low simmer to a turbocharged boiling machine.
Easily fine tune the flame to the exact amount you need. The control is precise and it is easy to lower flame to very low simmer without turning it off like some stoves.
This is just another reason this BSR Ultralight Titanium Stove amazes me. It feels like a high-end well-manufactured stove. I have absolutely no complaints about the way this stove controls the flame. The flame burns in a spiral due to the design, which seems to help the performance.
Ultralight Titanium Stove Review | BRS-3000T – Weight
In the ultralight backpacking world, this is one of the most crucial factors.
Stove Weight: 0.9 oz
Bag Weight: 0.1 oz
In the weight department, this stove is absolutely in the lightweight category. Stove with the carry bag, weigh just slightly under 1 once. Add a 3.5 oz canister of fuel (6.5 oz total). So, the stove plus a small canister of fuel weighs only 7.5 oz total.
Ultralight Titanium Stove Review | BRS-3000T – Cons
Fortunately, there are very few drawbacks to this stove. This is based on the way I personally use my stove.
The primary disadvantage of this stove is the size. If you want to use large pots or pans, you may be disappointed in the pot support. Also, larger pots/pans will not heat evenly, they will basically have a hot spot. Being small and lightweight is this stoves greatest asset, as well as its greatest challenge. Paired with the wrong pot, this could be a bad fit.
The pot support arms are not heavy duty. If you treat it roughly they may not hold up. It defiantly would never support a heavy load. This is a poor choice for a cast iron pan. The support area is very small, so a pot with an extended handle may not balance on this stove at all. I personally use a 1-liter pot, this is a fairly large pot. However, it is round and tall and fits the stove nicely. Here is a link to the pot I use Pot (1-Litre).
Ultralight Titanium Stove Review | BRS-3000T – Conclusions
For use as a primary or backup stove for any length backpacking trip. This stove is a perfect fit and a tremendous value, as long as it is used for its designed purpose. For boiling water and preparing small meals, I do not think you can go wrong. I know it is now my go-to for any trip.
Hints & Tricks: Have you ever struggled to light a campfire when all you can find is damp or wet wood and kindling? This little stove doubles as a pocket flamethrower. I often use my stove to light the fire! don’t walk away leaving it burning next to the fire, remember the fuel canister can explode.
